Kings of Leon with The Black Keys & The Whigs

Kings of Leon are made up of the Followill brothers (singer Caleb, bassist Jared, drummer Nathan) and a cousin (guitarist Matthew). The Followill brothers are sons of a preacher who were raised on the road throughout the South and forbidden to listen to secular music. When their father resigned from the church, the boys relocated to Nashville and embraced the rock music they’d previously been denied. Named for their father, Leon Followill, the band formed in 2000. The boys began practicing and by 2002 Kings of Leon had interest from nine labels. A bidding war ensued, with the band ultimately choosing RCA Records. In 2009, the group landed their first Grammy award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals for “Sex on Fire.” This year, the hit single “Use Somebody” helped Kings of Leon earn Grammys for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, Record of the Year and Best Rock Song.

QUESTAPALOOZA

For its 5th Year Anniversary, Questapalooza (QPZA), the annual “Party for the City,” will return Sunday, September 5, 2010, and will be held at 410 Sporting Court. This year, QPZA is making a deliberate effort to expand its draw outside of Contemporary Christian Music with crossover band SWITCHFOOT headlining this year’s festival. Along with SWITCHFOOT, two artists will be making a return to QPZA this year. GROUP 1 CREW, who kicked off the festivities last year is coming back to open this year’s event. NEWSBOYS, with new front man Michael Tait (formerly of TAIT and dc TALK), will fill the middle slot. TAIT was the headliner for the very first QPZA in 2006. Through Tuesday, August 31, QPZA tickets are available at the unbelievably low price of $12. “In a time when ticket prices are increasing, we have drastically reduced our ticket prices, explained Assistant Pastor Justin McCarty. “QPZA has always been a great entertainment value, but now, it’s an incredible savings.” Tickets are available at Joseph Beth, Family Christian Stores, Lifeway Christian Stores, Kennedy Bookstore, CD Central and online at www.qpza.com. This year, we’re really pleased to be partnering with Compassion International,” McCarty said. “We’d also like to thank our sponsors for helping make this event possible. They include: Little Caesars, Bluegrass Orthopaedics & Hand Care, the Kentucky National Guard and Fazoli’s.” “The goal of QPZA has always been to let the city of Lexington and surrounding areas know they are loved, not just the Christians, but everyone,” McCarty said. “So we throw them a party every year. But it has to be a party people want to come to. And SWITCHFOOT is a band that people know.” This year, the winner of The Fame vocal talent competition will get to sing on Main Stage. SWITCHFOOT recently released their seventh album Hello Hurricane. Recorded with producer/bassist Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Rilo Kiley, Eminem, and Pink), this is SWITCHFOOT’s first album on Atlantic Records. In recent months, SWITCHFOOT has performed on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” As for the other two bands, QPZA is treading some familiar ground. GROUP 1 CREW is back and bringing “their own unique way of doing their music, with a style that mimics that of BLACK EYED PEAS.” NEWSBOYS, typically a headlining band in their own right, with 25 years experience and 13 studio albums in the can, released a new album appropriately titled Born Again in July that debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200. The band received a new lease on life when guitarist Jody Davis returned to the band after a 5-year hiatus and Michael Tait (formerly of dc TALK and previous QPZA performer) joined the band as the new front man in March of 2009. “We didn’t think we would get the NEWSBOYS,” admits McCarty. “But we called them on the off chance that it might happen. Turns out, they were pretty excited to do it, but they agreed only on the condition that they be allowed to bring their entire set up and do a full show.” When asked about the rest of the festival, the rides, the fireworks, the funnel cake, McCarty said, “Everything is up for grabs. We really went back to the drawing board this year and tried re-imagining what QPZA could be like. But I’d be very sad if funnel cake wasn’t there this year.” For more information about the bands, festivities, and tickets, check out www.qpza.com.

On her 7th studio album, Sing: Chapter 1, she celebrates 25 years of her epic journey by giving us a garden-seat glimpse of those extraordinary influences and the songs that inspired her. Wynonna’s first studio album in six years, Sing pays homage to 11 country, rock, blues and soul-baring standards originated by legendary artists that have formed the unique soundtrack to her own life. The brand new song, “Sing,” written by Rodney Crowell rounds out the album, which has critics already standing up to take notice: 'If you want to hear a singer's singer,' raves the All Music Guide, 'One who can move you to the core of your being – Wynonna Judd’s deeply moving, authentic Sing: Chapter1 is a fine place to begin, This may be her finest hour.' “All my musical chapters are here,” says Wynonna, with her trademark enthusiasm. “Every genre. These are the songs that have moved me ever since I was a little girl. These are the songs I have turned to for comfort and insight at every point of my life.”

Alltech Fortnight Festival presents: Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band

Grammy-award winner and five-time Grammy nominee, Peter Rowan is a bluegrass singer-songwriter with a career spanning over five decades. From his early years playing under the tutelage of bluegrass patriarch Bill Monroe, and following his stint in Old & In the Way with Jerry Garcia and subsequent breakout as both a solo performer and bandleader, Rowan has built a devoted, international fan base through his continuous stream of original recordings, collaborative projects, and constant touring. Born in Wayland, Massachusetts to a musical family, Rowan first learned to play guitar from his uncle. He spent his teenage years absorbing the sights and sounds of the Boston music scene, playing bluegrass at the Hillbilly Ranch and discovering folk and blues across the Charles River at the legendary Club 47 on Mt. Auburn Street in Cambridge. "I could sit in with the Lilly Brothers at the Hillbilly Ranch and then catch the MTA and be in time for Joan Baez's last set at the Club 47. Bluegrass appealed to me. It was callin' me—the harmonies, that high and lonesome calling-sound. Don Stover had played banjo with Bill Monroe, fiddler Tex Logan too, before they joined the Lillys. Mandolinist Joe Val taught me all the Blue Sky Boys and the Louvin Brothers songs. I would play a "sock-hop" with my rockin' group, The Cupids, and then make a beeline for the clubs. Sonny Terry and Brownie Magee, Josh White, Muddy Waters- they all came to town! "

Alltech Fortnight Festival presents: The Temptations

For more than forty years, The Temptations have prospered, propelling popular music with a series of smash hits, and sold-out performances throughout the world. “The crowds are bigger, the sales are sizzling,” says one industry report. “The outpouring of affection for this super-group has never been greater”. The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temps began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. It wasn’t until 1964 however, that the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced “The Way You Do the things You Do” turned the guys into stars. An avalanche of hits followed, many of which...”My Girl,” for instance...attained immortality. “It’s Growing,” “Since I Lost My Baby;,” “Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Beauty Is only Skin Deep,” “I Wish It Would Rain”...the hits kept coming.

Alltech Fortnight Festival presents: Gary Allen

“I ain’t really happy,” sings Gary Allan on “Get Off on the Pain,” the down-home masterstroke that begins and provides the name for his new MCA Nashville collection, “until the sky starts driving rain.” Unhesitatingly frank, mercilessly guitar-crazed, it’s the rocked-out country confession of a smart guy drawn to what the rest of the world calls wrong roads and long shots, or complains of as aching bones and stubbornness, or — as Allan sings in a spectacular stretch of drawn-out soulful vowels — underestimates as dark horses. And as the California-born superstar releases his eighth studio album, it’s about the most Gary Allan piece anyone could imagine. “That’s, like, very autobiographical,” Allan understates, talking about the song. “I feel like I’m living that right now. It’s got a lot of life in there for me: It represents the relentless quality of life on the road. You’ll never hear me singing about tractors or farms, just because I don’t know anything about that stuff. Wrong roads and dark horses I know about. Still, I think the pain can get to be some kind of a positive for me because it connects to everything I’ve ever dreamed of. While it’s relentless, it’s confirmation of the actual existence of this big musical drama, the result of the dream.” That dream, for Allan, was to become exactly what he has become over the course of a lifetime in the field: a singer and songwriter forever cognizant of country music’s rough and storied past yet never wholly enslaved by its stylistic or social traditions. As a teenager performing in California, he skipped the bars that didn’t want to hear him play George Jones music; as a Nashville artist, he never worried about rocking things out or missing an awards-show red carpet. “It’s almost become a challenge to get into this town. But I’m also really comfortable with where I am, being slightly on the outside.” Allan always has developed and continued to refine his own tattooed power and finesse. Alltech Fortnight Festival presents: Jason Mraz

The popularity of Mraz’s latest album “We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.” was jump-started by the single “I’m Yours” and has enjoyed international acclaim ever since its release. His pop roots remain but have given way to a more inspired, mature sound in recent recordings. Mraz states that his new album was inspired by “moments of self-realization, self-empowerment and self-improvement.”

Alltech Fortnight Festival presents: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Maestro Gustavo Dudamel

There is perhaps no other musical ensemble more consistently and closely associated with the history and tradition of European classical music than the Vienna Philharmonic. In the course of its over 160 year history, the musicians of this most prominent orchestra of the capital city of music have been an integral part of a musical epoch which due to an abundance of uniquely gifted composers and interpreters must certainly be regarded as unique. The orchestra's close association with this rich musical history is best illustrated by the statements of countless pre-eminent musical personalities of the past. Richard Wagner described the orchestra as being one of the most outstanding in the world; Anton Bruckner called it "the most superior musical association"; Johannes Brahms counted himself as a "friend and admirer"; Gustav Mahler claimed to be joined together through "the bonds of musical art"; and Richard Strauss summarized these sentiments by saying: "All praise of the Vienna Philharmonic reveals itself as understatement."

Alltech Fortnight Festival presents: Chubby Checker

Ernest Evans was born in Spring Gulley, South Carolina, but grew up in South Philadelphia, where he lived with his parents and two brothers. When he was a small boy, his mother took him to see Sugar Child Robinson, a child piano prodigy and also the famous country singer Ernest Tubb. Young Evans was so impressed, that he vowed to someday enter show business and took his first step toward that goal by forming a street corner harmony group when he was only 11 years old. By the time he entered high school, Ernest had learned to play the piano a little at Settlement Music School and could do a number of vocal impressions. He also went to South Philadelphia High School with his friend Fabian Forte, who would have show business success of his own. He entertained classmates whenever he could. After school, Chubby would sing and crack jokes at his various jobs including Fresh Farm Poultry on 9th Street and at the Produce Market. It was Ernest's boss at the Produce Market, Tony A., who gave Ernest the nickname "Chubby". The storeowner of Fresh Farm Poultry, Henry Colt, was so impressed, he began showing off his employee to his customers through a loud speaker. Henry and his friend Kal-Mann arranged for young Chubby to do a private recording for Dick Clark. A Yuletide novelty tune called, "Jingle Bells" on which Chubby did several impressions of top recording stars, was cut. Dick Clark sent it out as a Christmas greeting to all of his friends and associates in the music business. Cameo-Parkway liked it so much that they wrote a song called "The Class" and it became Chubby's first hit in early 1959. In June of 1959, Chubby recorded "The Twist". Bernie Lowe, president of Cameo Parkway records was not initially impressed with Chubby's recording and felt it may be a "B" side at best. However, Chubby felt "The Twist" was something special and worked hard promoting the record by undertaking non-stop rounds of TV dates, interviews and live performances. Fourteen months later, in the summer of 1960, "The Twist" was a hit. "The Twist" was not only the #1 song but it introduced the concept of "dancing apart to the beat". Over the next few years, endless songs incorporating "The Twist" into its name sprang up such as "Peppermint Twist", "Twist and Shout" and "Twistin' the Night Away". In addition, each new song brought a new dance involving "dancing apart to the beat" such as "The Jerk", "The Hully Gully", "The Boogaloo" and "The Shake". At the forefront was Chubby with "The Fly", "The Pony" and "The Hucklebuck".
